Ms. Charlie Cai Yi, LEE

Charlie is an year two student studying in HKUST. She is a passionate person who has participated in different learning programs in school for the last year. These experience gave her an acquaintance with the visual facilitation and digital marketing skills. Charlie develop a strong interest in design. She works to create pictures and capture stories using visual tools that inspire and engage people, while improving her proficiency in using design software. Her passion has earned her opportunity to work in a design thinking company. She believe design is not only about graphic, but the whole thinking. She is excited to explore more on it in the future.

Mr. Marco Lewis CLARK
UG Student, BEng in Mechanical Engineering,

Marco is a recent soon-to-graduate HKUST student majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Although coming from an engineering background, he has shown to be involved in other disciplines. Recently, Marco has started a health care start-up focusing on near-infrared technology, fusing engineering with entrepreneurship. Since its inception, Marco's venture has since been awarded by the MIT innovation node in Hong Kong as well as funded by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. In his academic years, he has participated as a Chairman of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, as a fundraiser for Alpha Kapp Psi (Chi Phi Chapter) and an Engineering Student Ambassador for HKUST. Online education is nothing new to him, as a proud Khan Academy scholar since IB Maths, he embraces the future of learning unreservedly.

Mr. Morris CHAN

Morris Chan is a second-year student pursuing the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) Degree at HKUST. Having studied journalism before transferring to HKUST, Morris has developed an enthusiasm in data analytics and its applications to bring positive changes in society. Therefore, he has changed his major to Mathematics and continues to dedicate time in sports and politics. Morris' favourite pastime includes learning through self-initiated projects, playing video games and enjoying sports events.

Dr. Meike SAUERWEIN
Lecturer, Division of Environment and Sustainability,

Dr. Meike Sauerwein is a lecturer at the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST. With a background in environmental chemistry, her research focuses on life cycle-based assessment of environmental impacts of production and consumption. Focusing on the fast-moving consumer goods sector, she is also interested in corporate social responsibility and initiatives to change patterns of consumption and nurturing green, ethical and critical consumers. Since 2017 Meike has been teaching courses and giving workshops on the topic of sustainable consumption and life cycle assessment. Her particular interest lies in exploring new teaching methodologies including experiential learning and gaming to teach an engage students on the topic of sustainable consumption.

Mr. Elton, Tsz Ting, MIAO

Elton is a Year 3 Computer Engineering student at HKUST. He has been an active participant in student development programs by the Dean of Students’ Office, including the multi-year leadership program Redbird Leadership Community. He joins Rufina’s team in the #U2.0 program to co-create new ideas for students’ personal and leadership development programs. Through #U2.0, he was awarded with the Learning & Development Traineeship, and is currently assisting with the implementation of the ideas he generated with the staff and students. One is a Community App CirGo that facilitates students to connect, and he is the creator of that app.

Ms. Kristen Ka Yu, LEUNG

Kristen, currently a year 3 student majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology in HKUST, with a heart to being more involved in this community. A Connect ambassador for community engagement(ACE) and an HKUST Connect Changemaking leader with experience in organizing voluntary services and advocating awareness on the campus. Besides, is also a person who is self-motivated and constantly looking for challenges that can offer chances to make a meaningful difference. Although without professional painting learning experience, passionate about using simple drawings and visuals aids to sketch the ideas, thoughts, and feelings from experiences gathered over the activities organized by HKUST Connect so far.

Ms. Agnes Chiu Ki, LAM

Agnes is a year 2 Global Business student. She joined HKUST Connect’s Cambodia Service Learning Trip which strengthened her determination to empower more children in the future. Since then, she has brought impact to various student bodies, like Enactus HKUST and Drama Society, HKUSTSU. She also received the Sun Kwok Yuen Talent Scholarship and Reaching Out Award from HKSAR Government. Agnes participated the #U2.0 Project and was awarded the Best Teamwork Individual Award, that allowed her to work with HKUST Connect staff to implement their U2.0 idea to encourage HKUST students to create greater impact on the community.

Mr. Timothy Pui Yin, CHENG

Dr. Florence Tang obtained her doctoral degree in Anatomy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her teaching interests focus on Anatomy in health professional trainings and research techniques in biomedical studies. She has a passion in education research and courseware development using emerging technologies.  Her team has developed several innovative VR/AR courseware to facilitate student teaching and learning processes. She also actively promotes STEM education at both high-school and university levels. Her work has been showcased at several international medical and nursing education workshops and conferences. Recently, was shortlisted for eLFA2020 Awards – Technology Innovation Award and finally she has got for the bronze prize.

Ms. Whitney YU

Whitney is a year 3 student, studying Environmental Management and Technology. Though she graduated high school still confused about her desired path of study, the topic of sustainability drew her in because of its interdisciplinary nature and the opportunity to make a difference in a changing climate. Dr. Fred Ku, currently Assistant Dean for undergraduate studies and Director of the Integrated BBA programme, has been with CUHK Business School since 2009. Prior to joining the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, CUHK Business School, he received his BBA and PhD degrees from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

With expertise in business economics, he teaches courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, managerial economics, and business statistics for MBA, MAcc, MSc and UG programmes. Dr. Ku has written 7 teaching cases, published a book on economics, and has been an active case contributor to popular economics textbooks. As a pioneering educator, he has also produced more than 10 educational videos, and developed an interactive classroom game. His prominent contribution to teaching and learning has been recognised by the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2013 and multiple teaching awards by CUHK Business School.

Since 2013, Dr. Ku has also served as Associate Director of Programme for Economic Education, Economic Research Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. He has led and participated in various teaching and learning projects supported by CUHK and Education Bureau. He also provides consultancy services for Trade and Industry Department of Hong Kong. Dr. Ku contributes to the professional community by conducting professional seminars and training workshops for Education Bureau. He is also a regular speaker for a popular radio show.

Dr. Jean LAI

Dr Jean Lai is currently holding a Lecturer position in the Department of Computer Science at the Hong Kong Baptist University. She received her PhD degree from the Department of Information Systems at the City University of Hong Kong. Before joining the Hong Kong Baptist University, she was with the University of Hong Kong. Previous to her research studies, she was an IT practitioner in the Hong Kong Banking sector over a decade. She serves as the chapter chair in the IEEE Computational Intelligence (Hong Kong) Chapter since 2018. Her research interests include: E-Learning Design and Applications, Social Computing, and Financial Technologies. She was presented with the Department’s Best Teaching Award for 2013/14 and 2019/20.

Dr. Mary HO was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at HKUST Business School, Hong Kong, from 2014-2020. She taught-business ethics courses at the School and focused on experiential learning for students through corporate partnerships. Prof. Rhea LIEM

Rhea Liem joined HKUST in August 2015 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She obtained her Bachelor of Engineering degree from the School of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She earned Master of Science (SM) degrees in Computation for Design and Optimization, and Aeronautics/Astronautics, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She then pursued her PhD degree in the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Laboratory, University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), as a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. She is a 2012 Amelia Earhart Fellow, which is annually awarded to selected female PhD students in the aerospace science and engineering field.

She is one of the first aerospace engineering faculty members at HKUST, where she does aerospace computation research in aircraft design and air transportation applications. She was awarded the SENG Teaching Excellence Award 2017/18 for her contributions in developing and teaching the Introduction to Aerospace Engineering and Aircraft Design courses.

Dr. Tracy ZOU

Dr. Tracy Zou is an assistant professor in the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at the University of Hong Kong. She has been actively engaged in identifying, collecting, and promoting exemplary teaching and learning practices in HKU and beyond. The UGC-funded cross-institutional project on internationalising teaching and learning led by her has resulted in a vibrant community of practice consisting of over 120 passionate faculty members who explored innovative approaches to internationalisation. The novel approach adopted in this project has been featured in several book chapters and two journal papers. The team’s contribution to the academic community was also recognised by HKU’s Professional Services Award as a finalist in 2019.

Mr. Paul D. LAVIGNE

Paul D. Lavigne is a Teaching Associate in the Center for Engineering Education at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has over 30 years of combined experience in the areas of teaching, training, and managing engineering projects. His research interests are in promoting the maker culture in engineering, internationalization in higher level education, and gamification in engineering courses. He has planned the learning environment to encourage students to use new technical knowledge to develop their design competencies. Lavigne holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an MBA in Project Management from Anglia Ruskin University.

Ms. Jessica CHAN

Jessica joined CLE in 2013 following an MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition (University of Oxford) and has since taught a range of English for Academic Purposes and English for Specific Purposes courses. She is also a trained Minerva instructor, teaching Multimodal Communication as part of the HKUST-Minerva Scholars Program. She now leads the Common Core course 'Mediated Me: An Introduction to Digital Literacy', which implements a blended-learning design and an active learning approach to address the newer communication needs required of our students socially, academically and professionally in our increasingly connected world.

Prof. Gang WANG
Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,

Prof. Gang Wang is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST. His major research interests are geotechnical earthquake engineering, soil dynamics and computational geomechanics. He obtained B.Eng. and M. Eng. from Tsinghua University, Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 2005, and joined HKUST in 2008. He is presently President of Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Associate Editor of Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. He was awarded Li Foundation Heritage Prize, HKUST School of Engineering Distinguished Teaching Award, Mao Yisheng Youth Award by Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, and others. Three of his supervised Ph.D. students and Postdoc have been enlisted into "National Thousand Youth Talents Program".

Ms. Rufina WONG

Rufina joined HKUST in 2008. Leveraging on her experience in the corporate world and education, she has pioneered and iterated multiple initiatives for HKUST in students’ personal growth, leadership development, and service learning. Her passion is to build up purposeful young adults with integrity and empathy so that they can make a unique contribution to this world. Currently, she leads a team of trainers to design and facilitate learning & development programs, and to provide one-on-one advising to develop students’ mindsets, skills, and characters. She holds a Master’s Degree in Intercultural Studies and Teaching, and is a Certified Facilitator of The Students Leadership Challenge, and PRISM Brain Mapping.

Ms. Micky WONG

Micky is currently the Manager of Co-curricular Programs at the HKUST Dean of Students’ Office. With academic background in Psychology and Counseling, Micky believes supporting students’ holistic wellbeing is one important factor to achieve academic success and life goal. She is therefore eager to promote positive and healthy student U life through interactive programs and activities. Micky started her career in HKUST as a School Student Advisor to guide students through the university transition period and major selection process. She then changed her role as a Manager to develop Reslife – an extended fun classroom for hall residents to live, learn and relax together after a long day of study. After nine years of experience working with students, Micky is now in charge of a brand of Co-curricular Program named +VibEs to spread good vibes and support all students’ emotional wellbeing through programs related to nature and animal, visual and expressive art, as well as music and culture.

Miranda joined the HKUST Connect in 2009 and is a Registered Social Worker. Miranda is an energetic, flexible, and creative trainer and advisor. She is passionate in people development and inspire young adult to find their goals. Miranda graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work, holds a Master of Arts in Work Based Studies (Coaching, Training and Development), and is a certified Lumina Spark Practitioner.

Ms. Beryl LAM

Beryl is a founding staff of HKUST Connect, a university-wide community engagement initiative, currently leading the program building, partner relationships, volunteer management and operations of the unit. She is passionate about the environment and sustainability issues, arts and culture, and inspiring students to be global citizens using their heart, head and hands. Beryl first joined HKUST at the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching (now the Center for Education Innovation). She has over 15 years of practical experience in program development, including in adult and lifelong learning, general education courses, service learning and community engagement programs for undergraduate students. Beryl is a graduate of HKUST with a BBA in Finance, holds an MA in Cultural Management from CUHK, and is an accredited facilitator of the 2030 SDGs Game.

Prof. Anirban MUKHOPADHYAY

Anirban Mukhopadhyay (PhD, Columbia) is the Associate Provost (Teaching and Learning), Lifestyle International Professor of Business, and Chair Professor of Marketing at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Consumer Psychology. He has previously served as the Associate Director of the HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), and Acting Director and Associate Director (PhD/MPhil Programs) of the School of Business and Management, HKUST. Professor Mukhopadhyay has published in leading journals in Marketing, Psychology, Economics, Nutrition, and Corporate Strategy. He is a past winner of the Early Career Award of the Society for Consumer Psychology, and has been recognized as a Young Scholar and an MSI Scholar by the Marketing Science Institute.

Prof. David J. HELFAND
Professor, Department of Astronomy,
Columbia University

David J. Helfand, a faculty member at Columbia University for 43 years, has served nearly half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications and has mentored 22 PhD students, but most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors. He instituted the first change in Columbia's Core Curriculum in 50 years by introducing Frontiers of Science, now required for all first-year students. In 2005, he joined an effort to create Canada's first independent, non-profit, secular university, Quest University Canada where he served as President & Vice-Chancellor from 2008-2015.  He also recently completed a four-year term as President of the American Astronomical Society, and is currently Chair of the American Institute of Physics. His first book, "A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age" appeared, appropriately, in 2016.

Prof. Lionel NI

Professor Lionel M. Ni took office as the Provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on May 16, 2019. He is concurrently Chair Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. Prior to this, he was Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) and Chair Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Macau. From July 2002 to December 2014, he served at HKUST in various capacities including Chair Professor and Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School and Special Assistant to the President.

Professor Ni earned his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1980. He was Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University (1981 to 2002), the Microelectronic Systems Architecture program director at US National Science Foundation (1995-1996) and co-founder and CEO of CC&T Technologies, Inc., Michigan (1998-2001), and the Chief Scientist of the China’s National 973 Program on Wireless Sensor Networks (2006 to 2011).

Professor Ni’s research publications have received strong support with over 35,000 citations on Google Scholar. The winner of 8 best paper awards, he has multiple achievements including ownership of 27 US/China patents and having supervised 73 PhD students.

A Life Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Professor Ni won the Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award from China Computer Federation in 2009, the First Class Award in Natural Sciences from the Ministry of Education, China in 2010, the Second Class Award in Natural Sciences for Research Excellence from the State Council, China in 2011, and the First Class Award in Science and Technology from the Guangdong Province in 2014.

Prof. Gray KOCHHAR-LINDGREN

Gray Kochhar-Lindgren is Professor & Director of the Common Core at the University of Hong Kong (https://commoncore.hku.hk/). Holding a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies, he served as a Fulbright Scholar in Hong Kong and as the Lead for the HKU and UGC Outstanding Teaching Awards (Teams). Having earlier taught in the US, Switzerland, and Germany, in 2017 he initiated GLADE (Global Liberal Arts Design Experiments) and is now co-designing, with students and colleagues, Critical Zones: Gender, Cities, and Well-Being; The Passion Project: Creating Work You Love; and a range of Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Research projects. His most recent book is Urban Arabesques: Philosophy, Hong Kong, Transversality and he is currently working on Noir: Thought, Art, Ecology and, with Graham Woodgate, a collection called Strange Resonances: The University and Transdisciplinarity-in-Motion.

Dr. Albert CHAU

Albert Chau is Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of Hong Kong Baptist University (2016-now). He received his BSc in Industrial Engineering and Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and MSc and PhD in psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Ben has been the recipient of numerous teaching excellence awards during his almost decade-long teaching at the University, including the finalist of the QS Reimagine Education Award 2018 (Global) organized by Wharton School QS Reimagine Education Award Committee; School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award in 2016 & 2020; the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2016 - Honorary Mention, the Nomination for the 2017 & 2020 UGC Teaching Award, etc. He also accumulated over HK$20M education related grants as a PI and has over 50 journal and conference papers published.

Prof. King L Chow

King L. Chow, Prof. Life Sci, Chem & Biol Eng, Public Policy. A molecular geneticist in training, he researches on neural development, evolution, synthetic biology. His interests probe into integration of technology, education and society. He has served to set up the various programs; Molecular Biomedical Sciences, the University Common Core, Individualized Interdisciplinary Major, and a Gifted Education Program at UST. He currently heads the Dean of Students Office promoting democratization of education, recognizing a diversity of talents, removing disciplinary boundary, and aiming to make the university an agency of changes, knowledge creation, talent development and self-discovery for individuals.

Ms. Helen WONG

Helen Wong joined HKUST in 2000 and is currently serving as one of the Heads of Dean of Students’ Office. She has played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of co-curricular programs in the 4-year undergraduate curriculum. The team works closely with schools, faculty members and teaching support units in designing and delivering outcome-based educational and student development programs in holistic development, leadership, and service / experiential learning. She is the founding Program Director of HKUST Connect, a community engagement initiative established in 2009, which serves to provide myriad experiential learning opportunities bringing positive impact to multiple stakeholders.

Prior to her current role, Helen was the Associate Director of HKUST College of Lifelong Learning in 2003-2009 and the Head of Programs and Instructional Development Team of the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching (now the Center for Educaiton Innovation) in 2000-2003.

Helen holds an International M.B.A. from Schulich School of Business and a M.Ed from University of Wollongong. She is a certified praticioner of Lumina Spark Psychometric Assessment and a certified facilitator of the 2030 SDG Game.

Mr. Jac Ka Lok LEUNG

Jac Ka Lok Leung, is a Teaching Associate in the Center for Engineering Education Innovation at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has 8 years of combined teaching, training, and research expertise as an instructor in first-year engineering courses and a professional skills trainer in mentorship and student-led programs. His research interests include fostering first-year engineering students’ learning motivations, measurement and assessment of active learning courses, and promoting the maker culture in engineering. Leung holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and MS in Environmental Engineering at HKUST, currently a candidate in the Doctor in Education program at The University of Hong Kong.

James has come a long way from his early years working in the rainforests of New Zealand’s national parks to the urban jungles of Asia’s greatest cities. A native of New Zealand and long term resident of Hong Kong, James brings over 25 years of experience and insights gleaned while managing and leading projects in a variety of industries, countries and cultures.

As an enthusiastic facilitator, learning experience designer and team coach, James has delivered over 600 days of programs in 20 countries to more than 20,000 people from over 150 companies. More specifically, James is a master at the Gamification of the learning journey.

James and his team are no strangers to HKUST, having spent more than a year working alongside faculty and students, running workshops to upskill people to embrace digital tools and methodologies, introducing graphic recording, co-designing and delivering last Summer’s #U2.0.

Prof. Stuart GIETEL-BASTEN

Professor of Social Science and Public Policy

Stuart Gietel-Basten is Professor of Social Science and Public Policy. He is the Director of the university’s Center for Aging Science; and is Associate Dean (Research) of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prior to joining HKUST in 2017, he was Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University of Oxford. He received his PhD in historical demography from the University of Cambridge in 2008.  

Stuart’s research covers the interplay between changing population dynamics and public/social policy. His research is especially focussed on (a) fertility transition; (b) conceptual approaches to ageing; (c) population policy. He is the co-ordinator of the GGS-Asia project, which seeks to run the Generations and Gender Survey in Asian settings – including Hong Kong.

In addition to a number of articles in leading journals in demography and related disciplines, he has written two books on population - Why Demography Matters (with Danny Dorling, Polity Press 2018) and The “Population Problem” in Pacific Asia (Oxford University Press 2019 ) -  and co-edited a third – Family Demography in Asia (with Minja-Kim Choe and John Casterline, Elgar 2019).
